WINOL Week 3 Debrief

The bulletin was very light on news this week. It seems we really were scraping the barrel with stories. Charity stories, job fairs, and a new fire station for Winchester-not really hard hitting news. The packages were all of high standard nonetheless, with reporters improving every week.

Angus pointed out that the headlines and links were very weak again, and has now banned the link "....has more", and "I spoke to...."

The reporters have been told (or reminded) to use their best pictures to entice their viewers, because really good footage will want to be seen again by viewers.

Finally, when using Vox Pops in a package, do not say that views were mixed. That is the point of vox pops-Voice of the People. We are aiming to get a variety of opinions, so there is no need to say it in the voiceover.

I thought the presenting was very good, and very professional, and good work with the live OB from outside. It was very well organised, with people either side of the presenter stopping people from walking through the shot.

It was a very good effort from everyone this week. All deadlines were met, and the Sports section was very strong, with lots of matches covered this week.

Finally, the running order needs to be revised carefully. The fire station story as an "and finally" followed by Justinas' Polish Bulletin, made it look like the sports highlights had been put in halfway through the news stories.

It has also been brought to the attention that we need a news planner. I will be finding someone suitable for the role, and reveal this person very soon!

WINOL Week 1 Debrief

There were many problems with this weeks bulletin: Black holes after the headlines, caused by not leaving the shots long.
Scripting errors: Winchester City is said twice in two headlines, may have sounded better as Winchester City Centre, followed by Winchester City (F.C)
The wrong camera shots were used at the wrong times in the studio and there was also a slight issue with sound levels during the breaking news story.

Headline: "2,000 homes may be built" Do not use maybe. Maybe also means maybe not.

The Barton Farm package had a very quiet voice-over, and the shot of the field was left a little too long, as well as slightly shaky camerawork. The studio presenters were not muted during this package, and a cough can be heard over the voice-over.

After the crime package, there is a long pause in the studio, and it seems neither presenter knows what is happening. Also, the first few seconds of the sports presenting, Cara's arm can be seen in shot.

In the Winchester City football package, the voice-over is fighting with the tannoy, and the natural sound is far too loud to be able to clearly hear the voice-over and as-live commentary.

There is a long pause before the Basingstoke package, and when the VT is finally played, there is no sound over it. This was supposed to be an OOV, but an error in the gallery meant the presenter was muted.

The final handover should have been a 2-shot, as when Gareth hands over to Cara, it changes from a one-shot of Gareth, to one of Cara in which Gareth has completely disappeared.

It was a very good effort on everyone's part for the first week back, but there were many small mistakes made, which need to be tackled ready for next week.

There were a variety of sign-offs used in the packages this week, and so it has been decided that the sign off is {Name}, Winchester News Online, {Location}.

WINOL Progress

Due to my incredibly busy schedule, I haven't got round to doing weekly updates of my WINOL progress, so here's an overview of whats happened so far.

As a sports reporter, my first match was Winchester City vs Moneyfields for a practise run with the cameras. My first package was Eastleigh vs Basingstoke, which made the first WINOL bulletin.

My next match was an away game in Bournemouth with Winchester playing the Poppies.
The next week I covered Alresford Town vs Winchester Castle, and Winchester vs New Milton Town.

On Tuesday 19th, I took a trip over to the Isle of Wight to film East Cowes Victoria vs Winchester, and then over to Hayling Island on the Saturday for another Winchester game. I wrote the match report for this game, which appeared in the Hampshire Chronicle.

My last game was Totton and Eling vs Bournemouth Poppies. This went into the bulletin, but I found out I was presenting WINOL this week, and so my package was used as an OOV. I really enjoyed presenting, especially with Jake Gable presenting the news. Not only did I present the sports section of the bulletin, but I also did a live studio interview with Winchester City manager, Guy Butters.

I was also presenting this weeks WINOL, but this was done "as-live" from Winchester City's football ground, rather than in the studio.

So far, I've had something either in the bulletin, or on the website every week, and hopefully my work will be good enough for me to continue this. But for now, Im planning on a quick home visit this weekend, so my next match will be on Tuesday.
